At the age of 52, President Abraham Lincoln became the first president to be born outside of the original thirteen colonies. He was born on February 12, 1809, in a one-room log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. Later his family moved to southern Indiana in 1816. His formal schooling was limited to three brief periods in local schools; this is because he had to constantly various work to support his entire family.

Subsequently Lincoln, as a self-taught lawyer, legislator, and vocal opponent of slavery in America, was elected the 16th president of the United States in November 1860. This occurred shortly before the outbreak of the American Civil War.

Today Lincoln is known as one of the greatest presidents that America has ever had. But at the time of his election no one would have predicted Lincoln's great success.

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." This is a very good statement to apply to President Lincoln.
