On June 16, 1963, aboard Vostok 6, Soviet Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to travel into space. After 48 orbits and 71 hours, she returned to earth.

Valentina was selected from more than four hundred applicants and five finalists to pilot Vostok 6. In order to join the Cosmonaut Corps, she was honorarily inducted into the Soviet Air Force and thus she also became the first civilian to fly into space.
