Charles X, the younger brother of Louis XVI and Louis XVIII became king following the death of Louis XVIII in 1824. Charles was born in 1757, the youngest son of Louis, Dauphin of France, who was the eldest son of Louis XV. Louis the Dauphin of France died in 1765, making Charles' older brother Louis in line for the throne. Louis XVI became king in 1774 when Louis XV died. For much of Charles' life he was known as the Comte d'Artois. During the French Revolution, he left France, first living in Savoy, then in Britain, returning to France during the Bourbon Restoration in 1814.

Charles became the heir apparent to his brother Louis XVIII, since Louis had no children. When Charles succeeded to the throne, his attitude toward the nature of the monarchy was a stark departure from his liberal minded predecessor. Charles never did accept the changes in the country and monarchy since the French Revolution. His policies did not endear him to the people of France, to the point of helping to cause the July Revolution of 1830.

During the revolution, Charles decided to abdicate in favor of his grandson, Henry, but Louis Phillip, a member of a cadet branch of the royal family (he is a descendant of Louis XIII, a fifth cousin of Charles X and not in direct line to the throne), had himself declared "King of the French" by the French Chamber of Deputies. Charles returned to exile, first in Britain, then in the Austrian Empire, and died in 1836.
