Queen Victoria (1819-1901), Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and Empress of India, was the maternal grandmother of Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859-1941). Wilhelm's mother was Victoria, Princess Royal (1840-1901), the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria's reign of 63 years and 7 months is known as the Victorian era. It was a period of industrial, cultural, political, scientific and military change within the United Kingdom. Queen Victoria was related by blood to virtually all of the crown heads of Europe and had earned the nickname "the grandmother of Europe." Wilhelm's grandmother and mother died in the same year, 1901, just 8 months apart. Kaiser Wilhelm II was the last German Emperor and King of Prussia. He reigned from June 15, 1888 to November 9, 1918. He was the eldest grandchild of Queen Victoria.
