Who was the only actor to receive an Emmy Award nomination for portraying a 1960s US TV "Batman" character?
The only actor to receive an Emmy Award nomination for portraying a 1960s US TV "Batman" (1966 –1968) character (villain) was Frank Gorshin. He was nominated for an Emmy Award (Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Comedy) for his best-remembered role as The Riddler on ABC's 1960s live-action television series "Batman", starring Adam West and Burt Ward.
Gorshin's portrayal of the character included a high-pitched, deranged cackle, inspired by that of Tommy Udo (Richard Widmark) in "Kiss of Death" (1947). He played the Riddler in ten episodes of the series as well as the theatrical movie, although John Astin made two appearances in 1967 in the role on an occasion when Gorshin was unavailable. Gorshin reprised the role in the 1979 television movie "Legends of the Superheroes".
Frank John Gorshin Jr. (Frank Gorshin) was born on April 5, 1933, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He mostly performed as a character actor, impressionist, and comedian on TV and in films. He is now perhaps best known as an impressionist, with many guest appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "Tonight" Starring Steve Allen. He died at age 72 of lung cancer, emphysema, and pneumonia in Burbank, California on May 17, 2005. He had appeared in over 70 movies and made over 40 guest appearances on television shows.
