Tecumseh was born in what is modern-day Ohio in 1768. This area was the scene of constant fighting that included the British, French, and various Native American tribes. The emergence of an independent United States added an increased fervor in the struggle as Americans poured into the Old Northwest. Tecumseh's Confederacy, of several thousand warriors , hindered further American expansion. The Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811, under the command of Tecumseh's brother, Tenskwatawa, seriously shattered the Confederacy. But it survived to aid the British in the War of 1812, contributing to Detroit's capture in 1812. Tecumseh's death in the Battle of the Thames in 1813 saw the demise of the Confederacy.
