One of the greatest comebacks in a season was accomplished in 1969 by the "Amazing Mets" aka "Miracle Mets". The Mets entered the MLB in 1962 as an expansion franchise. In 1969, they started play in divisional play in the National League East division. Before 1969, the Mets rarely exited the cellar of the league (finished last or second to last).

On August 14, 1969, about 1 1/2 months before the close of the season, the Mets were 10 games behind the Chicago Cubs. It is almost unheard of to make up that kind of ground. However, over the next 45 days, they would lose only 11 games of 49 games (a 76% winning percentage!) to finish 8 games ahead.

Picked as a full underdog against the Baltimore Orioles, the Mets entered the World Series. The '69 Orioles were arguably considered to be the best in all of major league baseball history.

Mets were classified as a also ran and quickly counted out. Baltimore easily won game 1, as the odds and bookies predicted. However, the Mets defeated the Orioles in Baltimore to carry a tie to Shea Stadium in New York. The Mets would sweep the remaining games and win the world series 4-1.

Three members of the '69 Mets have been inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame: Yogi Berra (coach), Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver.

The '69 Mets were the first expansion team to win a division title, a pennant, and the World Series. The 1969 Mets is one the greatest comeback stories in all of professional sports.
