Batu Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan, commanded the Tatars of the Golden Horde. He was responsible for completely destroying the city of Kiev in 1240. The Siege of Kiev by the Mongols under Batu took place between November 28 and December 6, 1240. At the time, it resulted in a total Mongol victory. When the destruction occurred, Kiev was reputed to be one of the largest cities in the world, with a population exceeding 100,000 in the beginning of the early 12th century.

Ultimately, as a direct result of the victory in 1240, Batu Khan and his soldiers were able to proceed westward into Europe.

Now, in 2016, Kiev is an important industrial, scientific, educational, and cultural center of Eastern Europe. It is home to many high-tech industries, higher education institutions and world famous historical landmarks.
