In early June, students who did their final exams will be notified of the result, those students who passed and thus graduated hang their bags on the flagpole to celebrate their graduation.

This is a typical Dutch custom that originates from the 1920's, in those times, going to study was a rare occurrence and only available to the wealthy.

In the 1960's studying became more accessible to the general populace and thus going to study was something that was considered a sign of pride for the family, in those times not all people owned a flag, so they used to hang textbooks from their windows, later people hung their school bag from poles and this evolved into the flag post with a school bag.
