Most people have seen the famous painting of Washington crossing the Delaware by boat at night during the winter. Washington wanted to attack the British garrison at Trenton NJ, and he picked the day after Christmas to do it. He knew that the troops would celebrate Christmas and would not be ready for a battle the morning after.

The troops at Trenton were German paid mercenaries known at Hessians, and they fought for the British.

Washington's plan worked better than expected even though a large part of his force never made it to the battle. The Hessian troops were caught by surprise, and totally overwhelmed. Washington's troops suffered only 4 casualties during the engagement. This victory was a huge morale booster for the Continental Army even though it was a small battle.
