Why did the ancient Egyptians mummify their dead?

When the spirit reunites with the body especially after it's buried, that is resurrection. So what is the difference between believing in resurrection and believing that the spirit will be reunited? I still say that my answer is correct.

Sounds like you have quite a fascination with ancient Egyptian culture. Pretty cool. I used to feel the same way about Norse and Celtic cultures.

@Ruben Pages... & to plan their funeral in advance so they built these naffin' great obelisks to house their 'stiff, cold' bodies..... yeccchhh! when I go, I want to say 'fire it up & slide me in'.... but unfortunately my religion decries such practices, even to the point of gathering up exploded body parts to try to keep the remains 'whole', not necessarily intact, but complete, as a 'set'.

Algernon Bhoomz, you bring a good point to the table. But keep in mind, that "faith" in religious beliefs, "is the substance of things hope for, & the evidence of things not seen." There is where you have the Religion vs Science battle that continues on, in people personal beliefs about life.

Once again, Religious doctrine seems to override Scientific fact. I recall the old idiom.....Science is based on facts, Religion is based on belief.

The Egyptians had or had their own beliefs.

This ancient technology of mummifying the remains of the dead belong to the Nubians, who practiced it long before their land was invaded by the Arabs. Nubians are among the Kushetic branch of people who also are indigenous to North East region of Africa.

Michael J Telesca, perhaps, I can give you some clarity, between the (2) answers. The first answer says, that the soul re-enters the body, to be reunited. There is nothing after that happens. The second answer speaks of a resurrection. That means that the body, is a living & breathing individual, who functions on a daily basis. Keep in mind the soul is everlasting. But the body only houses the soul temporary, until it is called into judgement, by the "Good Lord."

Ruben Pages, every country has it's religious beliefs, & cultures on how to carry out a burial, at the time of death. You don't have to agree with it. But it would be a courtesy, to respect that country's way of honoring their deceased.

Resurrection is not just reuniting with the body... the meaning of resurrection means "restore to life", but not necessarily to a human body. Other cultures believe in the soul resurrecting into animals and other living forms.

Kevin Hill, you didn't read the article, after you answered the question. The soul had to find the right body, in order for the soul, not the body, which would be a resurrection, if breath re-entered the body, & the body rose to move, & about it's way of life. But the only resurrection on record is "Lazarus" who was raised from the dead, by "Jesus Christ."
