Why does cardinal repeatedly fly into windows?
Cardinals, in the family Cardinalidae, are passerine birds found in North and South America. They are also known as cardinal-grosbeaks and cardinal-buntings.
Males can be aggressive when defending their territory, and they frequently attack other males who intrude. This tendency sometimes leads cardinals to fly into glass windows, when they charge an "intruding bird" that is really their own reflection.

Same as regular birds. As a kid growing up we had to place curtains on all windows and glass doors because all birds, mostly sparrows, kept flying into the glass for this reason.

Murray magpies (aka mud larks or magpie larks) are regularly seen 'attacking' rear vision mirrors on cars. Probably for the same reason.

Not just cardinals. Pigeons and wrens and hummingbirds have all flown into my window on the third floor.

Kept hearing a knocking, tapping sound at my door repeatedly. Would look out and not see anything. Finally went around from another door and mystery solved. Bird at door "giving the business" to that other bird in my shiny brass door plate!

One way to divert birds from crashing into windows is to tape colorful paper onto the inside of your windows. Birds see color well, but don't use blue or white, as the sky blends with those colors.

So, there is only one cardinal guilty of this behavior? No other cardinals on earth have this urge - to fly into windows? That's why the question should read "a cardinal"?
