Wild Bill Hickok was shot at which saloon in Deadwood, 1876?
On Aug. 2, 1876 at the age of 39 Wild Bill Hickok, James Butler Hickok, was playing poker at Saloon, Nuttal & Mann's (#10) Deadwood. The Black Hills of Deadwood. Hickok usually sat with his back to the wall. The only seat available when he joined the poker game was a chair with his back to the door. He asked another player twice to change seats with no success. Jack McCall entered the saloon at 4:15 p.m & drew his pistol, shouted "damn you, take that" as he shot Hickok in the back of the head. Wild Bill died instantly with his Smith & Wesson revolver in his holster, never having seen his murderer. McCall tried to shoot others in the crowd but all the remaining cartridges were duds. Hickok's hand was later called, Deadman's Hand. His hand was a pair of aces & black eights. In 1979 Hickok was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.
You got me wondering, why "Wild Bill"? So, not meaning to steal your thunder... While in Nebraska, James Hickok was derisively referred to as "Duck Bill" for his long nose and protruding lips. He grew a moustache following the McCanles incident and in 1861 began calling himself Wild Bill.He was also known before 1861 by Jayhawkers as "Shanghai Bill" because of his height and slim build.
James B. Hickok used the name William Hickok from 1858 and William Haycock during the Civil War.
John W Shreve... Both those things were named later... Deadman's hand was because of what Wild Bill was holding at the time of his murder... ALS was named after Lou Gehrig after he was diagnosed.
Well there goes my family history... I was always told that Wild Bill had changed the name Hickox to Hickok, and that he was related to my great-grandfather, Benjamin Hickox, who was a minstrel. This came from our family historian who has long since passed away.

He was again tried and convicted of the murder and sentenced to hang!
