skclary, it is a reference to pulling a ridiculous stunt to get attention as Fonzi in Happy Days did in I think it was season 5. It was absolutely absurd.

Susan Agnelli, I think it started with Happy Days when the Fonz was water skiing and jumped a shark. Some seem to think that's when the series was going downhill.
