Alan Conyard, Ecuador is nearest to SPACE. It's highest peak, Chimborazo,is farthest from the center of the planet, because the Earth is an oblate spheroid. The Earth is not a perfectly round sphere. It bulges at the equator.

Parts of Alaska (the Aleutian Islands) straddle the 180 degree longitude line. Hence Alaska is both the most western and eastern US state as well as being the most northern.

Alaska is the northernmost, eastern and westernmost.
Hawai'i is the southernmost.

Actually, Alaska is both the farthest east and farthest west state in the US. The farthest east is based on the International Date Line.

Can someone explain how Alaska is the most eastern state, please ? I've gotten it right, after the last time it was in a quiz! But, I don't know how it is considered the most eastern??? ANYONE???
