You are conflating HEIGHT from base with ALTITUDE. Everest is higher above sea level. While Mauna Kea may be TALLER from base to peak, its overall ALTITUDE does not reach that of Everest.
Contrary to popular belief Everest is NOT the highest mountain in the world. That title belongs to Mount Mauna Kea in Hawaii which stands at 33,000 feet whereas Everest is around 29,000 feet. Approximately 80% of Mauna Kea is underwater
