It's good that you specified the Western Roman Empire. Byzantium fall around 1415 AD. Russia claimed heritage to Byzantium, The Russian dynasties fell during the First World War. There is a text book called "The Medieval Mellenium" which claims that the last vestiges of the empire are alive and well in European royalties. Go figure.
