What is the difference between myth and legend?

How do you distinguish between myth and legend?

The terms should have been clearly defined at the beginning of the quiz. There are dubious distinctions made here. SMH

Myth - `a traditional story, especially one concerning the early history of a people'. Legend - `a story from the past that is believed by many people but cannot be proved to be true'. So not a lot of difference. And if something is accepted as being historically accurate, surely it can also be considered as being a fact? A bit of a disaster of a quiz.

Shelley Durocher, Having said that, I still don't agree with some of the answers.

I agree that Myth and Legend need to be defined. In this quiz, I believe the author is using "Myth" to mean that neither the person/being nor the event was real, like Medusa. And "Legend" to mean that it was a real person, but the event was not, like King Canute telling water what to do.

What in the world was that, about the most absurd quiz that came up with. Differentiate legend and myth.
