Lisa Grindall, they are actually opposite in that while I gripe about something, if I am told off about it by someone else then they are chiding me. Chide is closest in meaning to scold.

Donald Anderson, I agree. That's the one I missed. I thought it was a toss-up between gripe and complain and I chose complain.

I don't agree with all of the answers. Impossible to get all correct since the creator doesn't know what some words mean.
