If Eric is 25 and Jack is 2/3 of Eric’s age he would be 16 and 2/3. The question indicated that this is five years on and that going back a further a further 5 years Eric was twice as old as Jack. So taking 10 from 25 gives 15 (Eric’s age) and 6 2/3 (Jack’s age) which clearly isn’t half of 15!!!! Either the question was badly worded or the maths is wrong.

Answer for the last question should be 20 not 25. 25 means that the Jack is 12.5 10 years on he is 17.5 half of the other guys 35 not the required 2/3. For 20 half is 10 so Jack is 10 10 years on he is 20 which is 2/3 of the other guys 30.

Richard D. Boyle,
The equation as written is:
3 × 3 + 3 × 3 + 3 - 3 × 3 - 3 = X
Following proper order of operations, we do multiplication before addition yielding the following equation.
(3x3) + (3x3) + 3 - (3×3) -3 = X
This yields:
9 + 9 + 3 - 9 - 3 = X
9 + 9 = 18
18 + 3 = 21
21 - 9 = 12
12 - 3 = 9
The answer is 9.
As to the ages:
PRESENTLY, Eric is 25 and Jack is 15. There are 10 years between their respective ages.
5 years ago they were 20 and 10 making Eric twice Jack's age.
5 years into the future they will be 30 and 20 making Jack 2/3 as old as Eric.
