Ian Swindale, I did, too, in the sixth grade. It was something about changing improper fractions and decimals and percents, I think. Only, I did the wrong operation for the entire test, and there was no mercy there. I did not have real confidence in math again until geometry. Thank you, Christine

jch, Please check Mr. Mercer's comment on this page, above yours. According to him, you were on the right track, noting that the hour hand would not be on the nine itself. However, he and Mr. Thorson, below you, both remind the other players that the angle would be larger, rather than smaller, with the hand between the nine and ten. Thank you, Christine, James' wife

Mr Mercer, Very good thinking, Sir. I was thankful to see 90 degrees as an option, not considering the hour hand's position would not be on the nine itself. Thank you for sharing that for a person who did manage to understand geometry better than algebra. Christine, James's wife

Actually on the question about the degrees difference between the hour and minute hands at 9:30, the correct answer would be "None of the above." At 9:30, the hour hand would be half-way between 9 and 10, or 15 degrees past 9. Add that to the 90 degrees between 6 and 9 and you get 105 degrees. 90 degrees is closest to correct of the choices given.
