7 most incredible phenomena and wonders on Earth!
I discovered that there are some really crazy phenomena that happen in the world. So I decided to gather the 7 coolest ones to share with you!
#1 Venezuela has an almost never-ending lightning storm
Located at the mouth of the Catatumbo River, there is a storm that rages continuously, with 280 strikes of lightning an hour, for 10 hours a day, up to 300 days a year. This phenomenon has been going on for centuries. It is so massive that it’s visible up to 400 kilometers away.
#2 Once a year it rains fish in Honduras
Located in the Departmento de Yoro, this phenomenon has occurred between May and July every year since the middle of the 1800s. Witnesses say that there are dark clouds followed by thunder, strong winds, and heavy rain for two to three hours. Afterward, hundreds of living fish are scattered all over the ground.
In 1970, National Geographic went to the area with scientists to try to get an explanation but couldn’t find one. What’s especially puzzling to people is that the species of fish that fall don’t even inhabit the water around the area. Some believe that the fish are sucked up by a storm in the Atlantic Ocean 200 kilometers away, while the locals believe it to be nothing less than divine intervention.
#3 Morocco has tree-climbing goats
Found only in Morocco, these goats like to climb the Argan tree to eat its fruit. Farmers follow the herds of goats from tree to tree, collecting the nuts that they either excrete or spit out. Those nuts are then used to make oil which sells for up to $50 for a quarter-liter.
#4 The circumhorizon arc, also known as the fire rainbow
This stunning event can only occur when the sun is high in the sky and its light passes through high-altitude cirrus clouds containing hexagonal plate crystals which all must be optimally aligned. The sunlight entering the crystals kind of acts like a prism, which separates all of the colors out and creates a beautiful rainbow within the clouds.
This event has occurred all over the world, everywhere from Indonesia to Portugal. Have you ever seen this kind of rainbows? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
#5 Waitomo Glowworm Caves, New Zealand
Located on the northern island of New Zealand there is a cave that glows brilliantly like nothing you’ve ever seen. Hundreds of thousands of mosquito-sized bio-luminescent glowworms radiate a tiny blue light on the ceiling of the Waitomo Cave creating what looks like a sky of living lights. These glowworms found in the cave are exclusive to New Zealand and can’t be found anywhere else in the world.
#6 The Eye of the Sahara in Mauritania
Located in west-central Mauritania in Africa, this enormous circular depression stretches nearly 50 km (31 mi) across making it look like a giant eye. Also known as the “Richat Structure”, this landmark formed over time as wind continuously eroded its different layers of sediment, quartzite, and volcanic rock.
What makes this structure so incredible is, despite extensive field and laboratory studies, geologists still lack an explanation as to its origin. It was interpreted as an asteroid impact, then it was thought to be a structure created by a volcanic eruption and now it’s agued to be a deeply eroded geologic dome that collapsed. However, those are still just theories.
#7 Pele’s Hair
Named after the flowing locks of the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, Pele’s Hair is a form of lava that resembles thin strands of long hair. Also known as volcanic glass fibers, this odd substance is formed when molten basaltic glass from moving lava is blown out forming tiny droplets, and stretching out to form a fine line.
Due to its incredibly light weight, the strands are often found in high places, carried there by the wind. If you ever happen upon some of these golden yellow strands, practice caution by wearing gloves. That’s because it can be so brittle and sharp that it can break off and cut into your skin!
