Got a chuckle from China inventing toilet paper. In April, 2024 I took a one month trip to China and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, with beautiful scenery, great food and people along the way. There are many public restrooms in China but almost NO TOILET PAPER - unless you are at a hotel or other popular destination. All (or most of the ones in Shanghai, Lijiang, Dali, Chongching, etc.) of the city bathrooms in parks and even in smaller restaurants, do not stock toilet paper. My Chinese hosts told me that with so many people and so many restrooms, it is just not easy to keep TP stocked and most people carry their own. I only learned this after getting sick during a walk in Shanghai and ran to the toilet (most are not toilets but a hole in the floor) and had nothing to wipe with. From then on, I did indeed carry my own. This is something they do not tell you in any tour book, but sticking to airport, hotels and fancy restaurants - you will have no problem.
