Lack of sleep: what can it do to your life?
Sleeping problems can be really harmful. Statistically, nearly a third of the world's population are sleep-deprived. It affects our emotional state and cognitive abilities. Here are 7 dangerous effects of sleep loss.
#1 Lack of sleep dampens activity in several brain areas responsible for appetitive evaluation, so we eat more junk food and gain weight
#2 It can lead to serious health problems, as 90% of people having troubles falling asleep also have another health condition
#3 Lack of sleep can lead to injuries, accidents and auto crashes. Fatigue is a cause in approximately 1,500 annual crash-related deaths
#4 Sleep deprivation hurts our cognitive processes and impairs attention. If we don't get enough sleep, we are not able to remember everything we experienced during the day well
#5 Lack of sleep is correlated with reduced skin health and may lead to paleness, under-eye bags and wrinkles
#6 Insomnia is depressing. Most people with symptoms of depression sleep less than 6 hours a night
#7 It affects your immune system, as most infection-fighting cells and antibodies are produced while sleeping
So, we strongly recommend you to get enough sleep every night. The first steps to sleep longer and better are:
- establishing a sleep routine
- exercising during the day
- eating no less than 3 or 4 hours before bedtime
- not consuming caffeine
- using the bathroom right before bedtime
