Feel uncertain about how to start a conversation? That is not a reason to avoid social events and it shouldn't stop you from trying to make new friends .Take a look at these psychological tips to improve your skills!

#1 Active listening

If you can’t choose the theme for your conversation, let your partner tell you about themselves. Ask open questions, show your interest and smile if your interlocutor says something funny.

#2 Come a little bit earlier than planned

If you feel uncomfortable at a party or conference you should come beforehand. You’ll have some time to choose the best place and get used to your new environment and new people.

#3 Speak to yourself if you are nervous

If you have to make a speech but you are very nervous and can’t bring yourself down, say to yourself, «I think I…» and describe your emotions and doubts. That’ll help you to switch off your problems and worries.

#4 Stand next to your partner

Remember, if you are quarreling or arguing with your interlocutor you should stand not opposite them but next to them. That’ll help to reduce the tension.

#5 Make eye contact

When you meet a person for the first time, try to look them in the eyes and remember their color, try to smile at the same time. This eye contact will last for a couple of seconds, however, it’ll help you to make a good impression.

#6 Warm hands make a better impression

If you’re going to shake someone’s hand, warm your hands up in advance.

#7 Don't let people ask you inappropriate questions

If this happens, interrupt them. Try to reflect their speech or change the topic. You can ask them the same type of questions. It'll help them to realize their mistakes.

#8 How to be convincing?

To convince your interlocutor, avoid such phrases as “I think that...” and “It seems to me that...” in your speech.

#9 Be in a good mood

Just be happy! Cheer yourself up and the people you are going to meet will feel your happiness. They will associate you with happy moments and good mood.

#10 How to remember names?

If you have difficulty remembering people’s names, pronounce the name that you’ve just heard a couple of times during the first conversation with the person. It will help you remember their name better.

I try to associate a persons name with somebody else's who has the same name or an entertainer with that name . I also put the name in my phone when I get a chance with a mini description of the person .
