My father could whistle in many different ways. Despite his best efforts, I have never been able to make more than the gentlest whistle. Perhaps I will check out this video and see if this 'old dog' can learn a new trick.

I taught myself by the time I was in the 5th grade. Whenever I meet another whistler - I ask for a contest and I am always the winner (so far and I’m 67). It really gets peoples attention - especially in large gatherings (concerts). Never had trouble getting taxis.

Self taught with no fingers needed, I can't remember how long it took to learn but I have never lost a dog yet.

I am afraid that despite the help I remain one of life's non-whistlers!

I've been whistling with my thumb and forefinger, in my mouth since I was in 7th grade. It took me about 5 minutes, to learn how. When my children were young, (we lived in the Country on about 3 acres. Other neighbours had between 5, to 10, acres). Whenever they'd be out playing, I'd whistle, for them to come home, and they could hear my whistle wherever they were. Also, when I was in High School, and College, my parents had season tickets, 5 rows up on the 50 yard line, to the University of Memphis (Memphis State, at the time) Football games. Sometimes my parents didn't use the tickets, so my BFF and I would go to the games. I had some friends, who would sit, on the opposite side of the Stadium. I'd whistle, and they could hear me, clear across to the other side. That's how loud my whistle was, and still is. 😊

I can do it and louder than he does it.. and No I do not put my tongue like he does.. I can whistle with all my fingers and I can whistle just with one. or any finger combination or your fingers in my mouth.. I can. Thank You my good Dad.. and yes, Took me a long long time to get the hack of it! I was just a kid,, yes, I made myself dizzy walking around the yard in hopes if being to do it before Dad got home from work.. One day it worked... By golly I was never so happy...Now I could answer him when he whistled me home from the neighbors for dinner, I have taught my Grandkids .. Daughter and Son, When I whistle. It means come home or get to me! My Father said someone will hear you so will never be lost.. Hence 1 finger ,, in case you need to sound an alert and you don't have your other hand...

Mama taught me when I was 10. I only use index of both hands; my mouth is too small for 4 fingers. Loved being able to whistle for my kids to come home since my yell has no power. But my whistle--they knew exactly who it was! BTW, wore blisters on my tongue during the learning process! It was worth it.
