Culture Story: 12 most exotic fruit that you might not even know about

Do you know such fruit as durian or sapodilla? I will show and try to explain the tastes of these and some other most exotic fruit to you. Read and learn something new!

When you hear the word combination "exotic fruit", what comes to your mind? For sure bananas, mangoes, pineapples or coconuts. But these fruit we all meet everyday in supermarkets and they are rather popular and affordable. I have found rare exotic fruits from all over the world that one can seldom buy in a supermarket. You need to learn about these fruit!

#1 Durian

Durian is called the king of fruits in the Southeast Asian region. Its distinctive feature is an awful smell. But how some people say the taste of Durian resembles cheese with nuts with the after taste of banana, mango, pineapple and strawberry.

#2 Jabuticaba

The taste of jabuticaba resembles that of grapes. People use this fruit to make jelly, jam, wine. In Brasil it's even used to cure asthma, diarrhea and dysentery.

#3 Synsepalum dulcificum

Synsepalum dulcificum is also called Miraclefruit. These fruit have the extraordinary power to make everything sour taste sweet for about an hour. Eat one berry, and even limes taste like candy!

#4 Red banana

Red banana tastes sweet, creamy with raspberries or mango flavor. These bananas also contain more beta carotene and vitamin C than yellow banana varieties.

#5 African Jelly Melon or Kiwano

Kiwano or jelly melon is a traditional food plant in Africa. This fruit tastes like a mix of banana, cucumber and lime. This fruit is rich in vitamin C, Vitamin A, Beta Carotene and Magnesium.

#6 Tamarillos

Tamarillo is a close relative of tomato, chili pepper and eggplant. Although it tastes more like a tomato, it is a real fruit. Also it is a universal fruit that can be used in all kinds of cookery.

#7 Buddha’s Hand

Buddha’s Hand is also called fingered citron. This is an unusually shaped variety of lemon. It has almost no pulp, the taste of the skin of it resembles that of a lemon. This fruit is widely used in perfumes and as a natural food flavoring.

#8 Salak or snake fruit

The skin of this fruit resembles that of a snake, that is why it also called a snake fruit. It has a very exotic taste that resembles pineapple and banana with a light nut flavor. One should be careful with this fruit as the skin of it can prick.

#9 Black Sapote

What do you think when you see a dark fruit? Of course that it is rotten. That's true but not for Black Sapote. When the fruit becomes dark it means you can eat it. The texture, color and flavor resembles those of a chocolate pudding.

#10 Finger lime

This is probably one of the most unusual citrons ever. The pulp of the fruit resembles fish caviar that's why finger lime is also called lime caviar.

#11 Cupuacu

Cupuacu is a close relative of cacao and it has similar taste. It is Brazil's national fruit that unlike cocoa doesn't contain caffeine and rich in vitamin C.

#12 Akebia

People eat the fruit of Akebia the taste of which resembles raspberry. They also use its skin stuffing it with meat. Akebia also smells like cocoa.

I used to buy red bananas every time they were available approximately 20 years ago. Haven't seen them since. They tasted so much better than the yellow ones and I truly miss them. If they are available anywhere in British Columbia I'd love to hear.

My son loves eating Durian in China. He says it smells like rotting meat but the taste is outstanding! Once you get over the smell, the taste is wonderful!

Wayne arrington, in the case of the Black Sapote, once you peel it and put it on a plate it looks like a pile of mud (or something worse). Only then do you get to the delightful fragrance and taste. You have to really know the fruit in order to enjoy it.

Christina Tri Handayani, Due to its excessive odour, Thailand, Japan, and Hong Kong have banned the durian fruit in public transport. In Singapore, durian fruit is not allowed on all types of public transport and even taxis have signs to tell you that they refuse to carry passengers carrying stinky fruits .22 May 2020
