Almost all questions which arise in your head have their answers. And these answers can be much more interesting than you expect them to be.

#1 Is it possible to cool down the room if you open the fridge?

A refrigerator works to move heat from its inside to the coils on the backside. If you open its door the compressor will work more actively to keep the temperature inside the fridge and thus the room will get warmer.

#2 Why do fireflies glow?

Luciferin is a molecule that reacts with oxygen, adenosine triphosphate (an energy source in organisms)and enzymes. As a result, the oxyluciferin is formed, which is the key factor for glowing. The firefly can regulate the amount of oxygen that goes to its abdomen to produce oxyluciferin. So it can turn on or off the glow.

#3 Why is the sundown red and golden?

Everything is connected with the wavelength. At sunset, the light must travel further to reach the eyes, so the color spectrum shifts to longer wavelength – the red, orange, and yellow.

#4 How does an UV lamp dry gel nail polish?

Gel nail polish contains photoinitiators which absorb UV radiation. UV light triggers chemical reactions which help fluid gel to transform to the solid resin. Due to chemical restructuring which is the result of molecular chains become harder.

#5 Can we use seawater as an antiseptic?

Deep-sea water is considered to be pure and rich in microelements. That can't be said about surface waters which contain a lot of bacteria. So, in case of scratches or wounds, buy an antiseptic and don't use seawater for disinfection.

#6 Why do we yawn when see somebody else yawning?

American scientists assumed that yawning is a cooling mechanism of our brain. During the experiment, people were asked to put some ice on their forehead when they felt like yawning. Сontagious yawning decreased significantly.

#7 Why do we see better when we squint?

People with bad eyesight have slightly deformed eyeballs. So when they squint the form of their eyes changes a bit and that helps to see a clearer picture. The other reason is that tensing the upper and lower eyelids removes the flow of light from the upper and lower sides of the eyes. And the light that goes straight to the eyes doesn't require focusing.

The answer to number 3 is wrong. Light at all wavelengths travels the same speed. The reason sunsets are orange and red is the same as the reason the sky is blue… the atmosphere molecules scatter blue light. When the sun is setting the light must travel though more of the atmosphere scatting more blue and leaving the red orange side of the visible light which we then see.

The shifting to the red spectrum would only be true if the sun was rapidly receding from us ie red shift. Interesting enough on Mars the sky is red but the sunsets are blue!

Very informative. A little confused about number 6. Why is yawning contagious? Still wondering why.

6 has not been answered at all! The information about cooking with ice is interesting but does not tell us anything about the original question - about the reason for yawning being contagious!

I really believe that surface water in oceans is not pure due to all the pollution that the people of the world throw out daily and also garbage and sewage from industry and the fact that sewer pipes can overflow right into the water at the shore. Bonnie
