I'm adopted but I now know my real Mother and Grandmother were both Associates of the Royal Academy of Music so pretty near concert hall standard. I started playing the piano when I was 3 with the parents who adopted me as my adoptive father was a good player and I have played nearly my whole life. It's wonderful to be able to read even complicated pieces even if you don't have the technical skill to play the piece or read full orchestral scores.

Ian Swindale, orchestral scores are usually easy. The strings are always at the top, so you simply follow them. Also, I'm an adoptee as well,and my only child is adopted. Your 'real mother' is the mother who raised you. The mother who sat with you at night when you were sick, who kissed a scraped knee better, made sure you were fed, and encouraged you to follow your dreams. I'm sorry that you refer to the man who raised you as your 'adoptive father', as though he's somehow inferior to your biological father. It seems to me that the parents who raised you did a pretty good job.

Wish I'd had this instead of "Rudiments and Theory" when I was learning!

Very, very funny (comes from someone whose mother was able to put FRVCM after her name - but never did, sadly). The College is no longer a teaching college.

The treble clef was not made correctly. It should touch the first line, not be placed above it.

Learning to read music is just like learning to read a book.Same process...one step at a time. Fun and interesting if taught in a fun manner. Usually a group lesson is better to begin with. Especially helps focus attention and trains ear.

Don't read sheet music...now I know why.
