Tibet is an autonomous region of China known for its splendid landscapes, ancient architecture and diverse Buddhist culture. Its capital, Lhasa, is one of the highest cities on the planet – and one of the most breathtaking destinations.

"Lhasa" was first recorded as the name of this place in a treaty drawn up between China and Tibet in 822 C.E. It means Place of Gods. Lhasa is located at an altitude of 3,600 m (11,800 ft).

400,000 people live here, the majority of them are Tibetans. Many culturally significant Tibetan Buddhist sites are located in Lhasa, such as the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Norbulingka Palaces.
