The picture of the woman selling her children was (to me) obviously during the Great Depression. People simply couldn't feed, clean or properly provide for their children. The most hopeful solution was to hope your children could have a better life by selling them to a couple who deeply desired children and could afford them. I don't believe there was the thought of danger or perversion in those times....just a real desire to better children's lives and subsequently the mother's life. Do you disagree?

Betty Whelan, maybe she was having a bad hair day! Mum threatened to sell the four of us often enough! And Dad used to stop the car and threaten to leave us on the side of the road.

Really interesting. The nit picker in me insists on pointing out that Elizabeth didn't become Queen until 1953. However, as Princess Elizabeth she, like most other women of the time, did work.

In number 10, featuring the dead leopard, I suspect there's more to the story than we're being told. That leopard doesn't look big enough to tackle a fully-grown human for food. I think he must have done something to provoke it.

I was most impressed by the photo showing an impending execution by cannon. Chilled, that is. A hell of a thing to be standing there, waiting for.

Some of those kids for sale could still be alive. It would be interesting to learn what happened to them. Scientists are still looking for the Tasmanian Tiger. I watched a show (Extinct or Alive) recently on that animal--fascinating. Thanks for the pictures of yore--very interesting.

Waynette Morrison, in my opinion about JFK, there may have been a shooter from behind the motorcade but that was not the shot that killed him. If you see pictures of when he was shot he grabs his throat as he head goes backwards. My thoughts are he was shot from in front ot off to the side, because parts of his skull and brain were on the trunk of the car. If shot from behind, as was said by the investigation, those items would have been inside the car.

The suicide one was truly heartbreaking. Wonder what would have made a young girl feel that she had to jump from the Empire State Building. Such a tragedy.

cdeyokincarte, According to the caption it was 1948, so after the Depression. There had to be other better options, so yes I disagree.

Watching public executions was almost mandatory in many societies and even popular in the United States in the 19th century.

Pravin Shastri, I agree--the handbags, alone, are a dead giveaway, not to mention the "flip" hairdo's and headbands on a couple of the women...
