Rose is one of the most beautiful flowers in the world. Cultivation of roses began approximately 5000 years ago in Asia. Nowadays, about 100 different species of it exist in the world. #1 The first blue rose appeared in 2009

Before 2009 there were a lot of attempts to cross roses of different colors to get the perfect blue. The most successful one was in 2004: scientists from Japan and Australia used genetic modification to create something alike, but their roses were purple, not blue. Blue roses appeared in shops only in 2009.

#2 The most expensive rose cost 5 million dollars to breed

David Austin is a rose breeder who introduced Juliet rose to the world in 2006. It took him 15 years and about 5 million dollars to do this.

#3 Rose contains a great amount of vitamin C

The rose hip (the fruit of the wild rose plant) is a great source of vitamins such as vitamin C, B and A.

#4 Rose is one of the flowers mentioned in the Bible

Only three flowers are mentioned in the Bible. Rose is one of them. The other two are the camphire (henna) and the lily.

#5 Black roses don't exist

Unfortunately, black roses don't exist. The color we see is dark reddish-crimson, not truly black. The Turkish Halfeti rose or “The Black Rose of Turkey” is the name for a rose you thought to be black.

Rose oil can be called a real treasure, because of its expensive and time-consuming production - to get 1 kg of this oil one should take 3 tonnes of petals.

#7 The world's oldest rose bush is 1000 years old

The oldest rose bush is located in Germany. It covers the wall of the Cathedral of Hildesheim.

This rose appeared in 1978 in Germany and won hearts of thousands people around the world.

#9 Roses journeyed to space

The first rose that traveled to the outer space is called Overnight Scentsation. In 2002 this miniature rose was put into the space ship to study how low gravity would influence the smell of it.

#10 Rose is the national flower of the USA

In 1986 President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation that stated that rose should become the national flower of the U.S.A.

The rose hips bring back memories. 🌹 In the UK, during the second world war, rose hip syrup was allocated on the ration books for under 5yrs. olds, one bottle a month, one teaspoon a day. I remember it well as I was the one who had to spend a good part of a Saturday morning queuing up for it for my younger brother!
