#1 The oak tree species was around back in the age of the dinosaurs.

That’s right, oaks have been around for more than 65 million years. Scientists speculate that their longevity has to do with the fact that they encase their seed in hard shells which makes them able to withstand hard times.

#2 Not only have they been around for a while but they also have very long lives.

Oak trees are not considered old until they reach the ripe old age of 700 years old and even live to see 1000.

#3 During their long lives, oak trees produce over 10 million acorns which serve as food for many animals.

Each acorn contains one singular seed that might some day become an oak tree itself.

#4 If you’ve ever heard someone take a sip of expensive wine and say it tastes oaky this is what they were talking about.

Wine has been traditionally aged in barrels made of oak. This practice was started in the golden age of winemaking and it’s still alive today.

#5 Truffles and oaks have a close relationship.

Although the actual growing of these elusive fungi is still a mystery, we do know that truffles and oak roots have a special connection.

I did hear on Radio factoid that Oaks dont bear acorns until they are 50 years old, - - WRONG.!!! I planted an acorn wich 'grew' took it to Argyll where family live, 26 years ago, it bore its 'fruit' six years ago, and is as tall s the house.

First of all, I'm very fond of oak trees, for several reasons. Oak trees are what is known as "hardwoods" and they re-seed themselves (Big Oaks from little acorns grow...) and they are very important to building historically, architecturally and physically in this United States. If you have oak beams and boards in your home, you are extremely fortunate because there is every reason to believe they will stand the test of time, while softer woods may not. Real oak furniture, while it may be heavy (depending on who made it), will also stand the test of time. If you love wood working, you, no doubt, love oak wood. And there are many different varieties! Check out red oak, black oak, white oak, sessile oak, Hungarian oak...and more...!
