5 amazing facts about the mountain viscacha
This fluffy animal is adorable but what lies beyond the cuteness? Here are five interesting facts about the mountain viscacha.
#1 The mountain viscacha is a rodent but it closely resembles a rabbit.
Its tail is fluffy and it keeps it extended when it moves and curved when it’s stationary.
#2 This large rodent can reach up to 18 inches and 6.5 pounds.
Most of its length, however, is in its tail which measures up to 14 inches long.
#3 This fluffy critter makes its habitat in mountainous and rocky areas, preferring high altitudes.
#4
Unlike other members of their genus, these types of viscachas aren’t great diggers and so they’ll make their burrows in existing openings in the rocks, rather than digging up the ground.
#5 Mountain viscachas have a very interesting communication system in their colonies.
They have a variety of sounds they employ to let other members of the group know pertinent information. A high pitch whistle very similar to a bird sound is used to alert others of potential danger.
