The animal kingdom is fascinating. Our formal education barely scratches the surface! Here are eight facts you probably didn’t know.

#1 Ostriches are fast. Really fast!

They can run faster than a horse can and the males roar when they get territorial.

#2 There is only one mammal that can actually fly! The bat.

#3 Kangaroos are famous for hopping around.

But few people know that this is possible because they use their tails to propel themselves, similar to a third leg.

#4 Fleas are the Supermen of the insect world.

They can jump up to 200 times their own height in a single bound. The equivalent of that would be a human leaping to the top floor of the Empire State Building.

#5 Ants never sleep!

These insects are incredibly resilient and hardworking. They also vastly outnumber humans by a ratio of one million to one.

#6 One of our best weapons in reforestation attempts are squirrels.

They’re responsible for the planting of millions of trees simply because they forget where they buried their nuts.

#7 Oysters are feeling the fluidity of gender.

They can change it throughout their lives based on what’s more advantageous for mating at any given time.

#8 Man’s best friend has its own version of fingerprints.

Dogs' noses are completely unique and can be used for identification.

I have had many dogs over the last 30 years, usually 3 at a time, but I never thought about their nose prints being different. Interesting fact.

Kangaroos use their tail in pentapedal locomotion (slowest form of movement). That is 5 legs, not 3. Their tail is also used as a rudder (ie steering) when they are only using their 2 hind legs in full flight.
