We are rarely surprised but these unusual animals and birds will surely impress you! They prove once again that our nature is unpredictable.

#1 Sunda Flying Lemur

Actually, these species don't fly and they are not lemurs. They can glide from one tree to another and are never found on the forest floor.

#2 Thorny Dragon

This thorny lizard is native to Australia. Depending on the weather it can change its color from pale to dark brown. It has sharp spines and a false head on its back for self-defence.

#3 Cantor’s Giant Softshell Turtle

This freshwater turtle lives in Southeast Asia. It spends most of its life motionless and takes a breath only twice a day!

#4 Pink Fairy Armadillo

The smallest species of armadillo is native to South America. In case of danger, it can bury itself in sand within several seconds!

#5 Babirusa

They live on the Indonesian islands. Babirusa have long upper tusks which never stop growing.

#6 Goblin Shark

The goblin shark lives deep in the ocean and people don't know much about these creatures. They have long and flat snouts and can extend their jaws to the end of the snout!

#7 Kiwa Hirsuta

This "furry lobster" lives in the South Pacific Ocean. It was discovered in 2005 and is considered to be death.

#8 Lyrebird

These birds from Australia can mimic any sound they hear! Another distinguishing feature of lyrebird is its huge beautiful tail.

The first picture at the top is the lyrebird from Australia. They are unbelievable in their ability to mimic any sound they hear. Everything from kookaburra laughing to the ringing sound of your mobile, the click of old fashioned cameras to the warbling of magpies. You can sit in a valley and hear what you believe to be a valley of birds to find it is one or two lyrebirds making all the bird calls.

Number 2, moloch horridus, is more commonly referred to as a thorny devil. I'm very familiar with them since I work in central Australia as a tour guide. It's always a good tour when you find a thorny for your passengers, not least because they always seem to think you're some kind of genius for spotting it from the driver's seat of your vehicle. Every outback tour guide's favourite animal.

trish buckley, The Lyrebird lives in the south-east region of Australia generally in the temperate rainforest areas. The Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne is a very accessible area to hear them but you'll be very lucky to see one as they are quite shy and elusive!

trish buckley, usually in thick bush. Rarely seen, but often heard. They are very shy. As the description said, very good mimics of other birds. So if walking through the bush, you might hear all-sorts of different bird noises, it could simply be a lyrebird.
