What are some mind blowing facts about lions?

  1. Lions are not the kings of the jungle. They are kings of the savannah.
  2. The only lions to still live in forests are the last Asiatic lions, a subspecies of the African lion, who inhabit the Gir Forest of Gujarat.
  3. Lionesses generally prefer males with darker manes.
  4. Young males recently exiled from their pride may group together and create a cohort. Usually cohorts consist of brothers or cousins and the bonds within them are incredibly strong.
  5. Certain prides specialize hunting one species, even elephant and giraffe.
  6. Males may have multiple prides and travel between them.
  7. Lions once inhabited much more of the world, living in all kinds of ecosystems including Australia and Canada.
  8. The Barbary and cape lions are two extinct subspecies.
  9. Mountain lions are more closely related to house cats than to African lions.
  10. In 2014 it was estimated that wild African lions may be extinct by 2050. Lions are extinct in 26 African countries. Populations once surpassed 200,000 but now barely make 20,000.

My local zoo has a male and 2 females that came directly here from a refuge in Africa and participate in a global species survival program. We have had 2 cubs born since they arrived and the male cub has since sired a number of cubs at another zoo. The species survival programs are among the best ways to prevent extinction of these beautiful animals .

What they don't say is more lions are owned by private citizens in this country for breeding for circuses and road side zoo's where they are treated horrendously! Want to know more go Big Cat Rescue. Com. It's the number one sanctuary for Big Cats in the country!

If a male is neutered his mane will fall out.

Once again I say that if we are not more aware of what we are doing we will be leaving nothing for our children and grandchildren to see other than a picture in a book of many beautiful animals and birds.

So sad that they are becoming extinct. They are so beautiful, so majestic. Didn’t know they once lived in Canada and Australia. My cat walks like a lion and is a similar colour - must be a descendant! LOL

I'm surprised that males have more than one pride. It's heartbreaking that they're already extinct in so many countries

This is a fact not mentioned: the females of the pride do the hunting to provide for all in the pride including the male.

Surprised to find there was once lions in Canada. The darker mane thing was interesting and about the cohorts.
