Harvard psychologist, Dr. Deirdre Barrett, says they are. Moreover, dogs don't dream about chasing cats and playing with toys, they dream about their beloved owners.

Do animals really dream while sleeping?

Dr. Barrett has been studying humans’ sleep for years and can take sleep behavior in humans as a guide. Most mammals have similar sleep cycle. Dogs are one of them. Dreams occur during the last phase of the cycle when our brain is the least active and is in deep sleep. This induces psychologists to suppose that other animals dream too.

Dr. Barrett wanted to find out what dogs are dreaming about, so she started from analyzing humans’ sleep. People dream about ordinary things and everyday events. There is no reason to think dogs are any different. Dogs extremely depend on their owners; they treat owners as friends and even guides. So it’s more likely your pet is dreaming about your face and smell, of pleasing or annoying you.

Of course dogs dream, it is obvious that they do. However, I believe that they dream about many different things, just as humans do. I hardly think that they only dream about their owners.

When my dog dreams, he makes snuffling noises, his legs and paws are moving all over the place and it's clear he's "enjoying" whatever it is he's dreaming about. It's very entertaining to watch him when he's doing this.

I have a young Boston Terrier and she dreams a lot. Some of them seems like she is crying about something and really sad. Others her paws are shaking and she is barking. I feel sorry for her because they all seem to be scary or sad for her. I hope I don't make her unhappy, I try to make a good doggie mama

I've observed my dog and my cats dreaming- they move their paws and breathe like they're excited, so I think they're dreaming of chasing something.
