5 common species that only exist because of man’s involvement
Follow this article as we take you through five of the most common species that didn’t exist until the advent of man’s influence.
While mankind has been known to being a key player in the extinction game of several species, we have also led to the development and evolution of several new species through our various scientific means and processes.
Many of the species we know today all originated from undomesticated individuals and after scientific involvement, we have numerous variations from that singular species.
#1 The goldfish
The goldfish, a subspecies of carp, is one of those species that exist because of man’s deliberate actions. It is a highly decorated species that is found in most houses as pets.
The goldfish is known to have been in existence for over a thousand years. However, different variations of this subspecies have been selectively bred over the years in order to develop the species as we know it today.
#2 Potatoes
Originally, potatoes used to be a particularly inedible and bitter singular species (Solanum brevicaule). Many years of selective breeding done by the people of Peru resulted in different types of potatoes we have today.
#3 A bunch of greens
There are several veggies which surprisingly would not be in existence without our interference. They include brussel sprouts, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, cabbage and collard greens. These species are all members of the same family.
#4 Cattle
All variations of modern cattle originated from an ancient herd of aurochs, consisting of about 80 individuals. The period of development and evolution of the bovine family is said to span 10,500 years.
#5 Man’s best friend
Dogs, known to have been around for a long long time, exist as a result of man’s continuous polymorphic and selective breeding techniques. All species of dogs we have today are distinct extensions of a singular species, the grey wolf.
Over time, continuous selective breeding has been carried out in an attempt to bring the dogs as we know them today into existence.
