7 dishes that taste like hell
You might think the worst thing you've ever tasted was oatmeal you had to eat when you were a child. Well, we bet you are wrong. Check these unbelievable dishes that look amazing but taste like hell.
Delicious food is one of the most pleasant parts of any trip. However, everyone at least once in their life tried a dish that was not tasty at all. Though tastes differ there are national dishes that are really horrible. Tourist dare to try them to immerse themselves in the local culture. After they do it, they say raw fish pie tastes like food for the gods.
#1 Surströmming or fermented Baltic Sea herring
"So, to cut it short: basically rotten fish. Always curious about 'Cultural Delicacies', I obtained a can of this ... well, dish - and went right into a very special culinary experience." Jens Notroff.
#2 Pig blood curd: hate it or love it
It's a very popular dish in southern China. Though it looks like pudding it is coagulated fresh blood with a strong metallic taste.
#3 Mexican truffles or huitlacoche
Actually it is a pathogenic corn fungus also called corn smut. "Huitlacoche has an earthy, smoky flavor, sort of a cross between mushrooms and cor." Joe Urban.
#4 Beondegi is the case when pictures say louder than words
It is Korean street food made out of boiled silkworm pupae. It has an acidic flavor, a bit fishy and nutty. Some say the dish is much better than Surströming :)
#5 Hákarl: get ready for a fermented shark
"Hákarl, or fermented shark, is generally regarded as one of the worst tasting foods on Earth and Iceland’s national dish! They take a Greenland shark, drain it, let it ferment for 2-3 months, then dry it for another few months. I found it really fishy tasting at first, then the strong ammonia flavor kicks in (tastes like cleaning fluid)... I guess most tourists can’t suppress their gag reflex. Even I can admit it tasted bad, but it wasn’t inedible!" MikeGeorgeEatsTheWorld.
#6 Dried whitefish soaked in lye
Lutefisk is a traditional Scandinavian dish. It has jelly-like consistency and smells like a dumpster.
#7 Nattō is a traditional Japanese dish
Whole soybeans are fermented by special bacteria for a while. Though it contains a lot of vitamins some people say the dish smells like old socks or old cheese.
