Society Story: Newly coined words you might have not heard yet

At least 300 new words which describe modern social life and communication appeared this year. Let's take a look at them and decide whether we can use them in everyday life.

#1 JOMO

It is a feeling of contentment with one’s own pursuits and activities, without worrying over the possibility of missing out on what others may be doing.

#2 Textlationship

Do you have social media friends? Then you might have textlationships! It means a relationship with people who text each other frequently, but rarely if ever interact with each other in person.

#3 Colorism

It is differential treatment based on skin color, especially favoritism toward those with a lighter skin tone and mistreatment or exclusion of those with a darker skin tone, typically among those of the same racial group or ethnicity.

#4 Safe Space

Do you have a safe space? It is a place that provides a physically and emotionally safe environment for a person or group of people. People can freely express themselves there without fear of prejudice or negative judgment.

#5 Esprit de l’Escalier

It is translated as "the staircase wit". The phrase is used for the predicament of thinking of the perfect reply too late.

#6 Thirst Trap

This means a social media post, especially a selfie or other photo, intended to elicit sexual attention, appreciation of one’s attractiveness, or other positive feedback.

#7 Sneakerhead

Who is that? It is a person who collects and trades sneakers as a hobby, and who typically is knowledgeable about the history of sneakers!

#8 Virtue signaling

The sharing of one's point of view on a social or political issue, often on social media, in order to garner praise or acknowledgement of one’s righteousness from others who share that point of view, or to passively rebuke those who do not.

#9 Welp

It is an informal variant of "well", which is used to indicate disappointment, resignation, or acceptance at the beginning of an utterance.

Safe place ?? When I was young , and that was eons ago my safe place was a place we called home . A place where your mom and dad and your siblings also lived . A place filled with love and adventure and home cooked meals and a fun weekend was a cookout with some of your friends and family members . That was my safe place and i’ll tell you I miss the hell out of that safe place !!

bunch of blatherskite. My safe place when i was growing up was in my head. We played outside until the streetlights came on, rode bikes in the streets and generally stayed out of the house. I started my paperroute at age 12; had my own bank book at the third grade; read 'The Old man and the Sea' at the 4th grade. I had fights at school; did Cub Scouts, Webelos, Boy Scouts. Earned merit badges, arrow points, and the Arrow of Light.

We may not like these new words or phrases but it is worth noting that an estimated 800 to 1,000 new words are added to English language dictionaries every year, so no point being a luddite as we inevitably end up using many of them. Think Blockchain and Cryptocurrency as recent examples.
