In Māori language, the country is known as Aotearoa, meaning "land of the long white cloud". Its English name is derived from Dutch, meaning "sealand". But why is it "New"? In 1640s, explorer Abel Tasman named it after Zeeland, a province in the Netherlands.

As beautiful as it is, it is an extremely expensive place to live with below average wages that don't go up in accordance with the cost of living. As a NZer living in Australia, moving here 9 years ago was the best thing for me financially, romantically and mentally.

We have visited relatives in New Zealand twice and can't wait to go back. Such a beautiful country and the people are wonderful. We were on the south island and drove across the island one day. We saw mountains and grasslands and oceans. Driving on the wrong side of the road was a challenge but I managed to not get in an accident. Their bakeries are wonderful and I would love to have another "long black"...

Peter, you're not wrong, due to the country being so far away from others, so much like Aus, higher tax and import and export costs. All the same, a beautiful country, with some of the most beautiful and welcoming people I have ever met. My Dad is a Kiwi, and I think it be true that you may take the Kiwi out of New Zealand, but you'll never take New Zealand out of the Kiwi.
