¿Cómo hizo Colón su viaje hasta América si no había forma de conservar el agua y los alimentos?
bizcocho (pan cocido dos veces), salmueras, ahumados, curados, desecación…
También llevaban legumbres y arroz. Solo había que mantenerlos secos durante la travesía.
La forma de conservar el agua era mantenerla bien cerrada y protegida del sol. Hasta el siglo XVIII que un tonelero marsellés dio con la clave: encalar los toneles.
Y aunque el agua se corrompiese, siempre se puede recoger agua de tormenta y, además, llevaban bebidas alcohólicas que duraban mucho más. Esto, por poner un ejemplo reciente, lo experimentaron los ejércitos ingleses destinados en Sudáfrica: el agua que obtenían de los ríos estaba contaminada por los residuos de sus propios campamentos, arrastrados por las lluvias, y enfermaban de disentería. La manera de purificar el agua era añadirle ginebra, o recurrir a esta directamente.
