Is it possible to have an IQ score of less than 50?
Yes, a real life example of a person with an IQ lower than 50 is Joe Arridy. Joe was a mentally disabled man who was falsely accused of the rape and murder of a 15 year old girl in Pueblo, Colorado. Arridy was coerced into a confession and was ultimately executed in 1939.
Arridy was tested with an IQ of 46 by 3 state psychologists and was put in a school for mentally defectives as a kid. Arridy lacked the understanding of the crime that was committed, the confession he made, and the execution itself. It's believed that he didn't understand right from wrong. The testimonies he gave were inconsistent and the prime suspect Frank Aquilar had already been arrested and despite this Arridy was convicted of murder and was sentenced to death by gas chamber.
When being walked to the gas chamber after the guard had informed him of his impending doom Arridy responded “No, no, Joe won't die” and had been smiling on his way to the gas chamber. He was described as the “happiest man on death row”.
In 2011 Colorado governor Bill Ritter officially pardoned Arridy after evidence proved that he was not in Pueblo when the crime occured.
