6 beautiful pictures of colorful non-venomous snakes

Many of us are afraid of snakes. It is obvious: bites of these reptiles can be dangerous no matter whether they are venomous or not. However, if a non-poisonous snake bites you the injuries can be cured. Let's see how some of these species look like.

There are some distinctive features that will help to differentiate between poisonous and non-poisonous snakes. First, harmless snakes have a more rounded head and round pupils. You'll also see a visible line near their tail. Also, most of them lack heat-sensing pits. You might be surprised to learn that some of these snakes can be even useful! Speaking from practical experience, I can report that a live snake's skin feels distinctly pleasant. People with a phobia about snakes really ought to give it a try and find out that these creatures aren't so frightening after all.

I took care of a sick (because of neglect) 6 foot boa for about 6 months. I had to give it a shot twice a day. He cringed, if snakes can do that, but he never once made a threatening move to bite or otherwise.

I have never been afraid of snakes. My father welcomed them into the garden because they kept other pests away. Mind you, we had no constrictors or poisonous snakes where we lived. I respect all creatures and am mindful when in their area that I have to tread carefully...the grandchildren love it when I show them I'm not afraid and at our local museum we have been able to pick up and hold some of the constrictors.

Nick Hand, many years ago I was talked into holding a Burmese python. In the end, I did not want to let it go! You are right about feel of their skin. Not at all slimy as some people think. The most fascinating thing was the movement of the muscles as it moved over my shoulder and arms.

Janice Turkovich Stewart, I am still afraid of snakes. There are wild snakes in Australia, where my daughter Tanya and her family live. Tanya and her family are fine and safe.

Very beautiful in color. We had a huge Bull snake that lived at the nuisance grounds (dump) which kept the rat problem down. It was there for years. No one every bothered it.

I was a fencing contractor and farmer, here in Australia. We have the most venomous snakes in the world. Even though they are very common, I rarely came across snakes when working. They move away from vibrations and so if you don't creep around you wilfrighten them off just by doing your thing.

Picture number 1 is not a Burmese python. It is a ball python. Two very different pythons. The Burmese gets roughly 13-16 ft long and can weigh up to 300+ lbs. The ball python doesn’t normally get longer than 4-5 ft and weighs only 4-5 lbs. By the way the 4-5 ft are females and most males are lucky to reach 3 ft.

I had my first encounter with a corn snake when I was 8 yrs. Later on, a friend had a boa named Iggy(after Igor Stravinsky). That friend gave me a pair of fox snakes. All very interesting. Then there was the day my brother swore we had a cobra in the garden. Turned out to be a hog-nosed snake. My snakes used to curl up in the towel wrapped around my wet hair. Neat critters
