Básicamente la peste es una enfermedad bacteriana muy contagiosa y virulenta. El único tratamiento que tiene son los antibióticos en estados tempranos y alivio sintomático. Es decir: que no se muera por deshidratación y rezar si crees en algo
Al contrario de lo que se cree, la tasa de supervivencia de la peste bubónica es del 50% aproximadamente. Otros tipos como la septicémica y la neumónica tienen una mortalidad casi del 100% sin tratamiento.
Las técnicas más básicas de profilaxis, tratamiento y cuidado del enfermo eran desconocidos en esa época, de ahí la gran mortalidad
