Coffee does not keep me awake, it never has. I drink coffee because I enjoy the taste and it's comforting on cold mornings as well as evenings, or any other time. I don't understand the problem.

Ever since my service days I love my coffee and will often drink a pot a day or more with no ill effect. My wife drinks almost nothing but diet Coke :( How a person can drink soda with a piece of pie, a donut or a nice piece of cheesecake when there is a good cup of coffee available to me is abhorrent. I have to look away :)

Jennifer Dyster, Fun fact. If you drink decaffeinated, you aren't actually caffeine free. Decaf is just that it has a reduced amount of caffeine. If you intend to quit or need to be caffeine free for any reason (allergy or otherwise) it is best to look for products that specifically state "caffeine free", and check the label. Otherwise, yeah, if needed, stay off it.

Jennifer Dyster, Yeah, the difference between instant and when the whole bean is being roasted and ground. If you go a while without caffeine and then drink a proper barista ground coffee, with an extra shot or two, I assure you, you may not think it, but you'll be hyper-energy off the walls.

Vicky Buono, different things can have different effects as we age. Coffee used to do that to me, while hot chocolate would keep me awake. Now it's the other way. That said, I try to limit coffee before bed, especially if I'm stressed, as it tends to increase my potential for nightmares.

As an epileptic, I know caffeine shouldn't be good for me. That said, I love a good coffee. While I'm trying hard to cut back my soft drink (soda) intake, I can definitely see the withdrawal craving I get. Funnily enough, when I have one coffee, it will send me to sleep faster, while the level in hot chocolate will keep me awake, but that's probably more the sugar high.

I love a good cup of coffee but it doesn’t love me and I pay the price. I get jittery all day, even only one cup in the morning will prevent me from falling asleep at night plus I get diarrhea, followed by cramps. It’s just not worth it! So I can tolerate a decaf coffee once in a while.

Dark roast coffee has a more intense coffee flavor, but caffeine gets destroyed by heat. The longer the coffee is roasted (e.g., Espresso, French Roast, etc.), more caffeine gets zilched. If you want a buzz, opt for a light roast coffee.

Coffee never kept me awake when I was younger. But the last 10-15 years, caffeine can keep me awake the entire night if I drink coffee after 12 noon. I learned that the hard way.

I love coffee and will drink good coffee anywhere any time. But if it is not available I will just as gladly drink wine, beer or any other fruity drink but NEVER tea.
