All interesting photos but #5 is heartbreaking one, perhaps this mother was selling her kids against her will because she couldn't feed them no more due to the recession back in those days!!! So sad and devastating!!!

The knocker-up is the main character in Eric Knight's formidable story "Never come Monday". Ever read it?

All very interesting. Some are super. Feel badly for mother who had to sell her children. She probably couldn't feed or dress them. She was more then likely trying to save them!

#8 Before alarm clocks, some men worked as a "knocker ups", waking up people in the early morning this way (1900's). My Grandfather did that in a small village in England in the 1920s

Hrere'¡s a hint fpr you lads. The photo of the "knocker up" reminded me of a great short story by Eric Knight (the author of "Lassie") included in his collection "The Flying Yorkshireman". It tells the story of such a knocker up, in a small industrial village, that wakes up on Monday and "feels" that it is still Sundady, so he decides not to wake up the people in the village. What ensues is a brilñliant story, one of the best ever written in the English language. Look it up.
