Singapore is a hot city country. Gum sticking to sidewalks was a public nuisance and expensive to clean up. They also had a law forbidding people have standing water under flowerpots. I don't know if that still exists but police could go into homes and fine anybody breaking the law. Obviously there to fight mosquitoes and malaria. Germany, yeah, dangerous to stop on the no speed limit autobahn.

The Gum Law is Great, the United States should try it for a while, just look under any table in any restaurant, and those black spots on sidewalks is usually gum some nasty ignorant person has spit out on the sidewalk rather than put the chewed gum in a trash can .

Justine Howell, you might want to check a little deeper. A lot of places have what are called "blue laws." They are very old, outdated laws, but someone with knowledge of those laws can cause a lot of trouble. Does not matter how old or silly the law is; if it is on the books, it HAS to be enforced if some one complains to police about it. Remember, just because you don't know about a law does not mean that law cannot be used against you.

This is one of the most publicised weird Australian laws, with many websites claiming that it is illegal to wear hot pink pants on a Sunday afternoon in Victoria. However, there is nothing mentioned in old or new legislation that supports this. Therefore, this one is fiction!

It is great fun but at least two statements are completely false: 1) It is illegal to call a pig Napoleon in France -this is pure bunkum - there is no law against this. But there is a law against defamation of a French Head of State for which caricaturists and satirists have been fined and imprisoned. 2) It is illegal to put a stamp of the monarch's head upside down in England, or any stamp for that matter - also pure bunkum - you can place a stamp on an envelope or letter anyway you like, the wrong side, upside down, sideways, as long you put one on when you send your post! I do wish such drivel would not be put on public forums, it will make someone who believes them look like a complete prat when they are told the truth.

Peter de Loriol, This is about a stamp with the monarch being upside down. Don't see how it could be true now.

Placing a stamp upside down is treason? Maybe it would be a very long time ago, but nowadays?

Urban myth about the stamp. You can put a stamp anywhere in an envelope, but it makes sense, for sorting offices, to have them at the top right hand corner.

Many countries should follow Singapore. Too many dirty people spit gum out on the floor to stick to shoes. People also stick it under tables in cafés and restaurants. Filthy!
