I think the difference is being below them with SOME distortion & standing in front of them as an undistorted individual unaffected by there surroundings i.e. Wind, other animals & what ever THEY'RE doing plus you have to take into consideration. The makeup of their eyes. They don't see like we do.

A camera and mirror aren't that expensive. I'm pretty sure if you were a cave man that has only known the wilderness, you would be freaked out initially by encountering a mirror like this.

Used to have a dog who spent hours looking at herself in a mirror, and having done several tests I and a friend are convinced she actually realised it was herself, but she was an exceptional dog, current one takes no notice.

Richard Schmidt -- pools of water are generally dynamic in that they have movement and transparency, thus the reflection isn't at all accurate. Mirrors show a static image, i.e. no movement. But seems like you're saying that the gorilla shouldn't be attacking his reflection because he should recognize himself. I think you are mistaken. Compare it to catching a quick glimpse of yourself in a window ... that can be shocking because the window is not designed to offer an accurate image whereas the mirror is..
